Blog & News

The CAPICE blog hosts news and announcements, events, media and articles, mostly written by the Early Stage Researchers (ESRs).
They constantly pursue the publication of articles about their research during their activities carried on within this project, and this blog works as a travelogue to disseminate the research results to a broad audience of scientists, clinicians, patients and their parents and the general public.

“Hallo allemaal, Ik ben Kratika!”

Hello Everyone,
I am Kratika. Coming to The Netherlands has definitely been a challenge as I did not speak Dutch. But, gradually, I learnt the language and am a bit confident enough to speak. I love learning new languages and exploring cultures, by now, I have a good command over 6 languages! This country, and my university have been very supportive and accepting towards me as a foreigner.

This is Hema Sekhar Reddy Rajula, PhD student at the UNICA (University of Cagliari, Italy). For my secondment, I worked on CAPICE data catalog at Janssen-Cilag AB (Stockholm) for the duration of three months from March to May 2018.

Hej hej! I’m Sabrina Doering and I’m an early stage researcher (ESR) in the CAPICE project at the University of Gothenburg (Göteborgs Universitet). Together with Ashley Thompson and Marica Leone, I’m one of the CAPICE ESRs based in Sweden.
Living in Germany far too long, I decided to go abroad after high school and started my academic journey by studying psychology in the Netherlands. After three years of riding a bike, come rain or shine, I received my bachelor of science from Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen. To specialize in clinical psychology and neuroscience as well as to gain clinical experience, I moved to Switzerland to do a two years master of science at the University of Basel. Within CAPICE, I am lucky enough to combine my research interests along with the opportunity to be educated in the field of psychiatric genetics.

Hi!! My name is Marica Leone. I am originally from Italy and I am one of the 3 ESR based in Sweden. My ‘university journey’ started back in Italy, when I was enrolled in a bachelor degree programme in human biology. Although I really enjoyed most of the classes, I had always dreamt of studying abroad and experiencing a new environment. Therefore, I decided to move to Scotland where I finally got my bachelor degree in forensic and analytical science.

Hej! I’m Ashley Thompson, an early stage researcher (ESR) on the CAPICE project here at the Karolinska Institutet in the Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics. I’m lucky to be collaborating frequently with two other CAPICE ESRs based in Sweden, Marica Leone and Sabrina Doering.

Hi, I’m Eshim Shahid. I’m one of the two Capice PhD students at VU Amsterdam and started in August, 2017. I was born in Pakistan and moved to the UK as an adolescent so I’ve experienced education in both Eastern and Western settings. I studied psychology at Royal Holloway and did my Master’s in psychiatric research at King’s College London. I consistently juggled with the idea of clinical work versus research throughout my education but ultimately decided that I was most interested in understanding how and why psychiatric problems develop.

I am Laura Schellhas and, together with Elis Haan, I’m working as an early stage researcher (ESR) on the CAPICE project at the University of Bristol (UoB). Before moving to Bristol, I completed a Bachelor’s of Psychology and a Research Master’s in Behavioural and Social Sciences with specialization in clinical psychology at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands. Deciding to move to the UK brought some uncertainty with it, due to the forthcoming Brexit. However, when I first arrived in Bristol all these doubts were swept away. I had a very warm welcome from my supervisors, as well as from the other PhD students.

This is Elis Haan, PhD student at the University of Bristol, in the school of Experimental Psychology. My first supervisor is Prof. Marcus Munafo and my second supervisor Dr Hannah Sallis. I’m a clinical psychologist and psychotherapist by training and obtained a Master’s degree at the University of Tartu in Estonia. I have 8 years’ experience working with children and families in outpatient and inpatient clinical settings at the children’s hospital in Estonia.

This is Hema Sekhar Reddy Rajula, PhD student at the UNICA (University of Cagliari, Italy). My scientific supervisor name is Prof. Vassilios Fanos.  I am basically a Bioinformatics student, I am a graduate in masters in bioinformatics from Saarland University, Germany. I did bachelors in bioinformatics from Bharath University, Chennai, India. My master thesis project is Identification of differentially expressed genes from RNA-seq data and topology analysis of disease-specific networks via TfmiR.
